Need job interview help please
« on: July 22, 2010, 07:15:41 PM »

I have a job interview next week and I need some ideas on how to handle it. I'm not good in interviews and this one is worse because it's in a Starbucks, likely in front of tons of people and I have no idea what this person looks like. I haven't had an interview in a while so I really need some tips from other introverts on what to do/not do during the interview.

1. Try if possible to get some exercise done immediately before(of course don't show up all sweaty' - However by exercising your stress hormones are reduced and your nerves will not bother you so much. I remember I ran late to my first jobinterview many years ago and having to run, being worried about showing up on time reduced my interview jitters. In backsight very helpful, I got the job!

2. Be yourself - don't try to sell yourself by becoming another person - often this can be seen right trough. However, nothing wrong of course in being attentive, polite, friendly etc. Also try to see if you can have a conversation, not just that you undergo an interrogation. Eg. show interest in the company, the job and so forth

Good luck

Hi tripod! Alex gave good advice! The exercise really makes sense!

I always tried very hard just to be me when I went for a job interview.

However, I did own a very large business  for 12 years where I hired constant employees.I loved it when they showed up on time, they were neat and clean (yes, some came very wrinkled!) and came across, even 'fairly' confident that they could do the job.

I remember one very shy girl who came for an interview and she said:" I would really like to work here"! She won my heart immediately and got the job. She ended up being one of our quieter hairdressers with a sweetheart personality!

good luck and let us know! Sincerely, Margee

The key to my serenity is acceptance. I don't have to like it - I just need to accept it and learn the lesson I am supposed to 'master'!  Serenity begins when I learn to distinguish between those things that I can change and those I cannot.

I would read their website before going on the interview, and learn the most pertinent facts about their company. (Many companies these days won't even interview someone unless they have read the company website first).

When I got out of school we were told to ask the interviewer questions about the company. That's all changed now, the interviewers will typically ask YOU questions about THEIR company to find out what you have learned before coming to the interview.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Their website is under construction and has no information at all and I wasn't offered any information about the company or the exact job description, so beyond the job title, I have very little idea of what I would be doing.

The things I'm most worried about are

1. Walking into the Starbucks and trying to find this person. I get a little overwhelmed when I first walk into a place I haven't been before especially when I'm trying to find someone I've never met.

2. Knowing what to say/how to act, but I think you guys gave me some good tips on that one.

I would recommend going to the Starbucks a day or so before the interview so that it at least won't be an unfamiliar environment. You can scout out the nooks and crannies they are most likely to be in and have a feel for the shop so that you can be a little more comfortable.
Whenever I have to give a speech I find that actually practicing on that stage helps me a lot, so the practice might be helpful here as well.

That's a good idea but unfortunately it wasn't an option. I will just try to go in there a few minutes early tomorrow and scan the place to try and figure out who the person is and try to keep my nerves in check as well. Thanks all for the advice.  Smiley
