My Buzzing Boss
« on: January 04, 2010, 06:58:46 AM »

So, I'm about to go back to work and I have recurring worries regarding my boss.
He is a typical extrovert and constantly buzzes around my workstation being busy and frantic, and piling things on top of my neat organised systems.

It drives me crazy! I end up retreating more into my own little world and saying almost nothing because I'm annoyed with him.

His way of working is so frantic, and his doing that around me is what really affects me, I think.
I feel like telling him, 'Less haste, more speed!'.
The way he does things is so slapdash. He could spend  the same amount of time on things calmly and get better results.

Does anyone have any advice on dealing with this?

I am not sure if I have good advice, but, I have been in this situation. Bosses and co-workers who act this way. They may wrongly read your calm demeanor as "lack of enthusiasm for your job". I would make it clear that you are enthusiastic about your job, but you work in a different way. Try to explain.
Many introverted employees do excellent work and are an asset to their company, but they are pulled aside and told that others have a problem with their calm personality. Unfortunately, calm people can be unnerving to others.

This may depend in the field of which you work. Sales for example will demand extroversion (I am assuming.) While psychology would perhaps (in an office environment) be better suited for (and more likely to have) introverted "bosses".

Thankfully, I have rarely been told my quiet demeanor is a problem, although I sense some are unnerved by it. Sometimes I have delightfully surprised them with humor, or a discussion of a topic which I sense they are interested in.

I have a supervisor like this...always hyper, always askin' me if I have my "game-face" on...always acting like he doesn't trust me that I'm listening to him or doing my job...talk about your type-A personality! Sheesh!

Then there's lovely, lovely Steve, who's calm, and laid-back, even when he's at his most extroverted...he sees me and says something funny like "Hey,(my name here) is in the house!" I always end up blushing a bit when he says stuff like this just because I can tell he genuinely likes me as a person...and I find myself wishing I could learn how to be cool-headed and calm...just enough to keep my own sensitive temperament on an even keel and to learn how not to let others get to me. I mean, jeeminies...my very introverted friend Ann even tells me to calm down, and she knows what it's like to feel stressed to the point of tears...so that tells me I could use some lessons from Steve on learning that cool-as-a-cucumber thing he does so well.
