Greetings to everyone,
I just joined this board. I am a 32-year-old woman who has been introverted my entire life.
I can relate to so many of the other posts here about difficulties in school that most introverts have. When I was in school, it was a small, rural school with a total (K-12) population of about 400, all in one building. I only had 26 classmates, and cliques were formed early on..I didn't belong to them. Most of my teachers seemed indifferent to my introversion, but one bothered to notice...a recent college grad turned PE teacher who taught me for 2 years. She always would seek me out, and gave a lot of non-verbal shows of support (rubbing my back--suppose that wouldn't be allowed in today's classrooms!). I drew comfort from the attention. One time, our chorus was practicing in the gym, and she joined the group of kids in front of me to sing with us (multi-talented!). She saw me hiding in the back, and mid-song, walked back to me, put her arm around me and led me to the front row with her, and stood like that for the rest of the song. Nearly 20 years later, I re-established contact with her and told her that she had greatly helped me in those years, and she did remember me and was gratified to hear that. Now she is a school counselor, which, unknown to me at the time, she had wanted to be all along. She certainly had the emphathetic disposition all those years ago.
