No swearing on this forum.....nice!!!
« on: August 05, 2007, 04:13:06 AM »
 ;D

I've been on other forums, and always a bit surprised at the use of swearing disguised with spaces or *** and what not. I've even had to ask someone on a forum not to swear when they're chatting with me, as it offends me. I must admit, I was surprised to find that they apologised and didn't swear with me again, however, when reading other conversations I'm not a part of, they continue nonetheless.

I've only noticed recently, that no one swears on this forum, which is absolutely great. I'd like to know by consensus please:

1) It's something you don't do anyway
2) As an introvert, it's not really conducive to your way of life
3) You were brought up not to swear
4) You see swearing as a weakness
5) This forum does not tolerate swearing
6) Other reasons to be discussed

I just find it very interesting, and would appreciate if everyone would participate.

Thanks

Generally I don't swear, but especially in a forum context I find it particularly senseless. After all an electronic trace is logged for eternity and no reason for getting so emotional about something or somebody you don't interact with in person anyhow. Just my opinion.

I don't swear because it is just part of my values.  I also think maybe innies don't swear a lot because they think before they speak (or write) and swearing tends to occur when people are acting before they think.

I rarely swear.  I think that I do see it as a weakness if people do it constantly, because it makes it seem like they can't come up with something more intelligent to see.  I don't think it would occur to me to swear on any forum.  Offline, I've had people apologize to me for swearing even when they are people who clearly swear a lot.

I try not to swear but I don't understand being offended by it. What do you gain from that? Seriously. What's the payoff for being offended? Try as I might, I can't imagine a single benefit in such things.

I agree that there are more important things to get offended about than swearing. When I was growing up, my brothers and I had to pay a quarter to the "cussing up" whenever we swore. While this cut down on the swearing, it did nothing to address the underlying disrespect that led us to swear at each other in the first place.

However, I think swearing can be indicative of a lack of creativity. Why not come up with a more descriptive word to better match what you're feeling? From that standpoint, it would make sense that introverts swear less often if they are putting more thought into what they're saying.

I swear to mock my roommate but I don't when he is not around, or am trying to make a point.  Perhaps it is to show him how futile swearing is to effectively communicating.  However, I may swear under my breath to be courteous to others when I am angered at something.

There's been points in the past where I would swear up and down on a regular basis.  Then I kinda grew out of it.  Now I use a lot of "made up" cuss words like "fark" and "gorram."  It's the same sort of stress relief without the usual risk of offending someone unintentionally.
